Unit description

Introduces the fundamental issue of social policy in welfare practice. Issues of inequality and social policymaking, implementation and analysis are covered. Students are guided to critically analyse one specific social policy in its historical, political and social welfare context.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify some of the central issues in social policy development and analysis

explain how different philosophical perspectives on social responsibility shape the policy process

explain the relationship between social policy and the pursuit of social justice, as well as the impact of power relationships on gender, age, ethnicity, and socio-economic class

examine the influence of policies on the structure of Australian society, the wellbeing of Australians, and people's ability to respond to structurally-based impositions on their lives

describe how policies directly and indirectly impinge on practitioners in their workplaces

critically examine a specific area of social policy.
