Unit description

Focuses on practical skills for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of human movement, including ethical aspects of research with humans. Students will apply the principles of biomechanics, with other areas of kinesiology, in the analyses and reporting of selected human movements.

Unit content

  • Quantitative data sampling and processing techniques
  • Temporal, kinematics and kinetic profiles fundamental to healthy and clinical gait analysis
  • Ethical issues related to biomechanical research and movement analyses
  • Qualitative and quantitative movement analysis including preparation of an informed consent form, data collection, analysis, evaluation, feedback, recommendations and report
  • Methods related to assessing muscle activation patterns and understanding muscle activation patterns for healthy and pathological gait.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

outline and integrate applied biomechanics and common measurement techniques used to conduct qualitative and quantitative biomechanical analyses

outline and integrate the kinematics, kinetics and muscle activation patterns of basic human movements, including healthy, pathological and dysfunctional gait

apply biomechanical knowledge to perform ethical qualitative and quantitative analyses of human movement and communicate their findings

interpret temporal, kinematic, kinetic and muscle activation data fundamental to healthy walking and running gait.
