Unit description

Students explore assessment, differential diagnosis and treatment of a diverse range of clients in various settings as an approaching entry level clinician. Students will apply approaching entry level reasoning to clients with cooccurring conditions to formulate evidenced based assessment and treatment plans. Students will have opportunities to develop their ability to use effective problem solving, counselling techniques and work interprofessionally.

  1. Student wellbeing and placement preparedness
  2. The role of the speech pathologist when working with individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
  3. Neurodiversity: neuroaffirming assessment and treatment, and other key considerations.
  4. Working in youth justice
  5. Neonatal and paediatric palliative care.
  6. Complex trauma: considerations for speech pathology practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Appraise evidence, including research and assessment tools, to thoroughly investigate a client’s condition in order to formulate a diagnosis and develop a person-centred management plan

provide information and demonstrate affective counselling techniques, to be responsive to clients' and significant others' needs and concerns, whilst maintaining professional boundaries/clinician wellbeing

demonstrate effective problem solving, communication and interprofessional practice when providing intervention to clients
