    This unit includes two one-week compulsory residentials at SCU Coffs Harbour campus. Students are unable to progress to placement without successfully completing the residentials. Students who cannot attend the residentials should not enrol in this unit. This unit contains work integrated learning consisting of a 300-hour supervised placement in a professional psychology workplace. Students must meet mandatory fit to practice obligations prior to attending. Failure to comply by the fit to practice deadline will result in the cancellation of your WIL. Please note: Full COVID-19 vaccination is a mandatory requirement associated with the placement element of this unit of study. This requirement has been stipulated by the placement providers.

Unit description

Provides students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills obtained from the Master of Professional Psychology coursework units to professional psychological practice in real-world settings. Students will apply and develop autonomy, interpersonal and professional skills, and a level of independent practice, while gaining proficiency in applying psychological knowledge and skills consistent with current relevant ethical and legal frameworks, inter-professional and mental health practice standards.  

Unit content

This unit includes two compulsory one-week face-to-face residentials prior to commencing placement.

  • Introduction to psychological and collaborative practice, including legal and ethical obligations relevant to public safety and that of psychologists and inter-professional practitioners.
  • Psychological assessments and treatments which may include interviewing, case formulation, treatment planning and evidence-based therapeutic intervention.
  • Attendance at and participation supervision meetings, including receiving and responding to feedback.
  • Instruction and guidance in the choice of assessment instruments, the development and evaluation of psychological case formulations and action plans, and the construction of reports.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

conduct professional psychological interviews and assessments and synthesise information from multiple sources to develop case formulations inclusive of risk assessment and management

rigorously apply professional practice policies and procedures as they relate to the placement setting

apply and critically reflect on effective interpersonal and interprofessional communication skills, cultural responsivity, and ethical and professional practice, with relevant stakeholders

determine and implement appropriate evidence-based psychological interventions and monitor treatment outcomes
