    This unit includes a one-week compulsory residential at the Southern Cross University Coffs Harbour campus in the week commencing 19 June 2023. Students who cannot attend the residential should not enrol in this unit. This unit contains professional experience learning/laboratory activities that require students to meet mandatory compliance requirements prior to attending. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in you being unable to undertake the Professional Experience Learning and/or stipulated Laboratory Activity which may result in failure of the unit. Full details are available at www.scu.edu.au/healthplacements. Please note: Full Covid-19 vaccination is a mandatory requirement associated with the placement element of this unit of study. This requirement has been stipulated by the placement providers. It is strongly recommended that only students who meet this requirement enrol in this unit.

Unit description

Provides students with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills obtained from the Master of Professional Psychology coursework units to professional psychological practice in real-world settings. The first of two psychology practica develops autonomy, responsibility, and a level of independent practice in the profession of psychology. In this unit, students apply psychological knowledge and skills, consistent with current relevant ethical and legal frameworks, inter-professional and mental health practice standards, while developing inter-personal and inter-professional skills in a psychological setting.

Unit content

This unit includes a one week residential prior to commencement of practicum.

  • Introduction to psychological collaborative practice, including legal and ethical obligations relevant to public safety and that of psychologists and inter-professional practitioners
  • Psychological assessments and treatments which may include interviewing, case formulation, treatment planning and evidence-based therapeutic intervention
  • Attendance at and participation in supervision meetings, including receiving and responding to feedback
  • Instruction and guidance in the choice of assessment instruments, the development and evaluation of psychological case formulations and action plans, and the construction of reports.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply foundational skills required to conduct psychological interviews and assessments

apply foundational skills to analyse, interpret and report information to develop case formulations, including how to manage risk

demonstrate and critically reflect on effective interpersonal and interprofessional communication skills, cultural responsivity, and ethical and professional practice, with relevant stakeholders

demonstrate understanding of the foundational skills required for the delivery and evaluation of evidence-based psychological interventions
