    This unit includes a compulsory residential at an SCU campus in week 6. Students must successfully complete the residentials before progressing to placement. Those unable to attend should enrol in this unit only when they are able to participate in the required residentials.

Unit description

This unit develops foundational knowledge and skills in delivering evidence-based behavioural and cognitive interventions to support children and adolescents with psychological and developmental disorders. It also examines therapeutic approaches and professional issues in child and adolescent psychology, with an emphasis on ethical, culturally safe, and reflective psychological practice. A case-based methodology is used to guide intervention planning across a range of child and adolescent disorders, with the opportunity to practise the delivery of brief psychological interventions.

  2. Cognitive behavioural interventions
  3. Trauma-informed practice with children and adolescents
  4. Narrative and play therapy
  5. Family and systemic interventions
  6. Assessment of risk, monitoring interventions and concluding treatment.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse information from multiple sources to develop a case formulation and identify appropriate evidence-based psychological interventions

demonstrate the delivery of a brief, developmentally appropriate intervention

develop evidence-based psychological intervention plans that consider the client’s context, including the assessment and monitoring of risk, progress and outcomes

critically reflect on evidence and professional practice to support ethical, culturally responsive, and effective delivery of psychological interventions for children and adolescents
