    This unit includes a compulsory residential at an SCU campus in week 6. Students must successfully complete the residentials before progressing to placement. Those unable to attend should enrol in this unit only when they are able to participate in the required residentials.

Unit description

Provides an overview of cognitive, behavioural and other evidence-based interventions across the adult lifespan. Utilising an evidence-based practice in psychology approach to develop case formulations, synthesise information, and apply professional and ethical guidelines. Students will be able to determine appropriate interventions, evaluate their effectiveness, and collaborate with other health professionals where required. Students will consider the client's social, family and community resources, as well as biopsychosocial paradigms of wellbeing. Role plays will be used to further develop basic counselling skills and foster reflective practice as students experience the therapist and client roles.

  1. Intervention planning, responding to client preferences and interprofessional collaboration
  2. Cognitive behavioural therapy and specific psychological techniques 
  3. The therapeutic relationship, incorporating client preferences, assessing and managing risk, and monitoring progress and outcomes
  4. Psychotherapies - therapeutic group work
  5. Psychotherapies - dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT)
  6. Psychotherapies - schema therapy and trauma focused therapy

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply skills in interviewing and counselling, developing the therapeutic relationship, responding to client preferences (including cultural and social) and engage in interprofessional collaboration

evaluate, select, and implement a range of evidence-based psychological interventions for adults, considering individual client needs and presenting issues

formulate treatment plans, and assess, monitor and manage risk, progress and outcomes

reflect on the experience of adapting psychological interventions to be responsive to client preferences (including cultural and social)
