Unit description

This unit introduces the psychological and psychosocial concepts and theories of human development and human behaviour as relevant to social work practice. The unit overviews key theories and uses case studies to apply theories in social work contexts.

  1. Developmental psychology and lifespan theories
  2. Cultural contexts: social and emotional wellbeing
  3. Gender and sexuality across the lifespan
  4. Applying developmental theories to social work with children and young people
  5. Applying developmental theories to social work with older people
  6. Wellbeing, resilience and social work practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse and articulate common dimensions of social and emotional wellbeing across diverse groups, particularly for First Nations communities

evaluate and articulate the application of psychological concepts to social work in Australia

apply written academic material appropriately to develop, structure, and justify arguments
