Unit description

This unit covers the application of the Psychology Board of Australia Code of Conduct, as well as other ethical and practical guidelines as a foundation for future practice as a registered psychologist in Australia. The unit incorporates respect for cultural diversity, cultural self-awareness, ethical practice, professional communication and inter-professional collaboration. This unit also includes a revision of core counselling and interviewing skills essential for psychological practice. Students will learn culturally-responsive communication skills, and engage with cultural beliefs around mental health and well-being, including their own, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.

Unit content

  1. Foundations of professional practice including the Code of Conduct, ethics, and ethical decision-making models
  2. Core counselling skills and cultural responsivity
  3. Different cultural perspectives on mental health and wellbeing
  4. Professional communication, inter-professional collaboration and professional practice in legal contexts including digital competency
  5. Working in diverse settings (rural and remote, telehealth, and group work)
  6. Reflective practice and self-care in psychological practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse and manage ethical issues in psychology practice, applying the Code of Conduct, decision-making models, and legal frameworks

demonstrate counselling and interview skills, professional communication, inter-professional collaboration and the ethical use of digital technologies

apply culturally responsive and safe practices when working with socially and culturally diverse clients across the lifespan

engage in reflective practice to evaluate and improve professional competence and wellbeing
