Unit description

Provides a contemporary overview of behaviour analysis principles and an opportunity for students to explore their application in a variety of contexts. Contemporary behaviour change theories are described as well as the procedure for their implementation and evaluation in health, the workplace, and the community. Students will engage in deeper research by considering how behaviour analytic techniques could be employed to solve a specified problem in an area of their own interest. Students will be able to describe relevant behaviour change theories and their potential application to a variety of contexts. Furthermore, students will learn to plan and evaluate behaviour change programs on a group level and plan, implement and evaluate behaviour change programs on an individual level.

  1. Healthy social change
  2. Changing healthy behaviours in populations (focusing on alcohol and smoking)
  3. Changing healthy behaviours in the workplace (organisations)
  4. Changing healthy behaviours in the workplace (individuals)
  5. Changing healthy individual behaviours: Exercise
  6. Changing individual behaviours in sports focusing on performance

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

discuss contemporary principles and theories of behaviour change

apply behaviour change theories to an applied context

plan a social change program based on behavioural principles, and illustrate how it would be evaluated

monitor and implement changes to their own behaviour using evidence-based behavioural principles
