Unit description

This is one of four professional practice placement units to enable students to develop, consolidate and apply knowledge, skills and attributes in all aspects of physiotherapy practice, and within the health care system. Students develop an integrated problem-solving approach to understanding individual client problems to effectively select, plan, perform, and record evidence-informed management in diverse clinical settings, incorporating assessment, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, progression, prevention and promotion of health and well-being. Students will work as an interprofessional practitioner, demonstrating cultural capability. Students will perform as ethical and competent physiotherapy practitioners at a new graduate level according to the Physiotherapy Practice Thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Unit content

This unit does not follow the standard six module format.  The unit comprises 5 weeks of professional practice placement plus a one-week content delivery post placement completion. 

Due to the coordinated block placement allocation system, students may be completing a different area of physiotherapy practice within this unit.

The one-week content aims to assist students in undertaking evaluative judgement and to reflect on their experiences during their professional practice placements, and will cover the following:

  • The role of evaluative judgement (self and peer assessment) as a reflective physiotherapy practitioner.
  • Discussions and reflections on their management of specific cases during their previous two professional practice placements.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate ethical and professional decision making and behaviour appropriate to physiotherapy including adherence to relevant codes of conduct, standards of physiotherapy practice and client rights to ensure care of patients and protection of public

effectively communicate with clinical educator, and educate patients/clients and their families, carers and communities, and all other relevant stakeholders

apply evidence-based clinical reasoning in management of client presentations across clinical settings to achieve person-centred treatment goals and promote health and wellbeing

integrate reflective practice and contemporary knowledge and behaviours to meet the professional threshold standards for autonomous and collaborative inter-professional entry-level physiotherapy practice in a range of contexts across the lifespan

apply evaluative judgement and reflective practice skills within their role in the continual growth as a competent physiotherapist
