Unit description

This unit builds on Physiotherapy Practice: Cardiorespiratory 1 to prepare students for professional practice in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy.  Students will synthesise and extend their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology and pathophysiology in the management of more complex cardiorespiratory conditions. This unit focuses on physiotherapy management (assessment, differential diagnosis, intervention, evaluation, documentation, prevention and promotion of health and well-being) of respiratory conditions in the acute care and rehabilitation settings, incorporating exercise prescription. Students will apply clinical reasoning in the person-centred evidence-based physiotherapy management of people with complex cardiorespiratory conditions, across the lifespan.  Cultural capability, risk management and collaborative interprofessional practice in diverse populations will be incorporated.

  1. Physiotherapy management of people with respiratory conditions across the lifespan
  2. Physiotherapy management for airway clearance
  3. Health promotion and exercise prescription for people with respiratory conditions
  4. Medical and physiotherapy management of critically unwell patients; the multidisciplinary team
  5. Physiotherapy management for people with impaired respiratory function
  6. Physiotherapy management of cardiorespiratory function of people with complex conditions

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

design, implement and evaluate physiotherapy management of people with respiratory conditions, utilising a clinical reasoning framework

effectively communicate with client, the medical team and other relevant stakeholders and to educate, advocate for and empower people with complex cardiorespiratory conditions

evaluate and integrate evidence-based practice in the physiotherapy management of cardiorespiratory function in people with complex conditions

design, implement and document person-centred physiotherapy management for people in a critical care environment or with complex conditions, integrating collaborative interprofessional practice
