Unit description

This unit prepares students for safe professional practice in the complex area of neurological physiotherapy.  It builds on Physiotherapy Practice: Neurological 1, integrating skills and knowledge to manage developmental and acquired neurological conditions across the lifespan.  Students will enhance knowledge to manage impairments and activity limitations associated with complex and/or progressive neurological conditions.  Students will interpret findings, apply clinical reasoning, and further principles and practical physiotherapy skills to manage neurological conditions using a person-centred, evidence-based approach that is culturally responsive, incorporating collaborative interprofessional practice.  

Unit content

  1. Understanding of presentation of people with complex stroke including non- cortical strokes; Management (assessment and treatment) approaches of non-motor impairment
  2. Introduction to disorders of transmission and to progressive neurological conditions
  3. Physiotherapy management of people with Spinal Cord Injury and Functional Neurological Disorders
  4. Physiotherapy management of people with Traumatic Brain Injury [TBI]
  5. Physiotherapy management of people with vestibular conditions
  6. Case scenarios and applications

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse and integrate the influence of motor, sensory perceptual and spatial dysfunction on posture and movement assessment following neurological dysfunction

evaluate and integrate evidence-based practice for effective management of people with complex and/or progressive neurological conditions

effectively communicate with client, the medical team and other relevant stakeholders and to educate, advocate for and empower people with complex and/or progressive neurological conditions

design, implement and evaluate person-centred physiotherapy management for people with complex and/or progressive neurological conditions, integrating collaborative interprofessional practice
