Unit description

This unit presents the clinical reasoning framework for managing neuromusculoskeletal conditions of the upper limb, using a person-centred, evidence-based approach. Students will integrate knowledge of physiology, functional anatomy, biomechanics, psychology and pathobiology in understanding the presentation of neuromusculoskeletal conditions of the upper limb. Students will implement a clinical reasoning framework for safe effective management (assessment, differential diagnosis, intervention, documentation, prevention and promotion of health and well-being) of neuromusculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the upper limb across the lifespan. Cultural capability, risk management and collaborative interprofessional practice in diverse populations will be incorporated.  

Unit content

  1. Presentation, assessment and differential diagnosis of neuromusculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the upper limb
  2. Management of neuromusculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the shoulder and scapula complex
  3. Management of neuromusculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the elbow and forearm
  4. Management of musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the wrist and hand
  5. Rehabilitation approaches for upper limb conditions
  6. Rehabilitation approaches for upper limb conditions incorporating return to function and sport

Learning outcomes

select and perform physiotherapy assessment of neuromusculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the upper limb, integrating a clinical reasoning framework

design, implement and evaluate physiotherapy interventions for neuromusculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the upper limb integrating collaborative interprofessional practice

effectively communicate with client, the medical team and other relevant stakeholders

apply person-centred, evidence-based physiotherapy management of neuromusculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions of the upper limb for optimal client health and well-being, that is collaborative and culturally responsive
