Unit description

This unit introduces the professional practice area of neurological physiotherapy.  Knowledge of neuroscience, motor control and motor learning principles are integrated into a clinical reasoning framework and applied to movement analysis and task-oriented training for people with neurological conditions.  Students will develop the skills of observational analysis, quantitative activity measurement, ‘hands on’ neurological impairment assessment, facilitation, and task-training using a person-centred, evidence-based approach that is culturally responsive.  Students will be introduced to the principles of rehabilitation of people after stroke utilising the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework to guide the rehabilitation of neurological conditions across the lifespan, incorporating collaborative interprofessional practice.

  1. Structured functional assessment in neurological physiotherapy, utilising a clinical reasoning framework
  2. Bed mobility
  3. Gait assessment and retraining in people with neurological conditions
  4. Upper limb functional tasks
  5. Assessment and retraining of balance
  6. Introduction to pathophysiology and presentation of stroke and person-centred evidence-based physiotherapy management

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

effectively communicate with client, the medical team and other relevant stakeholders

design, implement and evaluate person-centred physiotherapy management for people with neurological conditions, integrating collaborative interprofessional practice
