Unit description

This unit builds on Introduction to Physiotherapy Practice to develop students' foundational skills. The unit introduces the evaluation of health, function and impairments, the use of outcome measures, and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. Students learn the principles of physiotherapy management for health and well-being, incorporating person-centred evidence-based approach that is culturally responsive, utilising collaborative goal setting, client education and feedback. Skills in digital health and online client consultation are introduced. Students learn to apply foundational skills in physiotherapy assessment, planning and evaluation.

Unit content

  1. Assessment and evaluation of health, pain, function and impairments; International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)
  2. Introduction to: principles of physiotherapy management for health and well-being; World Health Organisation and Physical Activity Guidelines
  3. Introduction to digital health and principles and methods of online client consultation (incorporating telehealth)
  4. Foundational Physiotherapy Skills A including active and passive range of joint motion, assessment, measurement and documentation
  5. Foundational Physiotherapy Skills B including manual muscle testing and dynamometry, assessment and documentation
  6. Foundational Physiotherapy Skills C including observational movement and use of mobility aids

Learning outcomes

select, perform and document foundational physiotherapy assessment skills
