Unit description

Builds upon student learning from  Lower Limb Medicine I.  Introduces students to disease processes and pathology associated with advanced foot and ankle conditions.  

Unit content

Topic 1: Body systems and systemic diseases affecting the lower limb

  • Epidemiology, mortality and morbidity
  • Aetiology, signs and symptoms
  • Management
  • Multidisciplinary care, communication and referral
    • Autoimmune disease and systemic arthropathies
    • Connective tissue and neurological disorders
    • Endocrine disease
    • Cardiovascular disease and respiratory conditions
    • Other diseases of the foot and ankle

Topic 2: Role of the foot and ankle practitioner in evaluation and management of systemic diseases affecting the lower limb

  • Lower limb clinical signs and symptoms
  • Laboratory tests
  • Role of the foot and ankle practitioner
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical rationale for intervention
  • Communication and case management (includes documentation review)
    • Autoimmune disease and systemic arthropathies
    • Connective tissue and neurological disorders
    • Endocrine disease
    • Cardiovascular disease and respiratory conditions
    • Other diseases of the foot and ankle

Topic 3: Sports medicine for the lower limb

  • Clinical signs and symptoms
  • Normal and Abnormal parameters in assessment and management of sporting injuries
  • Evidence-based practice and clinical rationale for intervention
  • Multidisciplinary care, communication, case management and referral
    • Common sporting injuries of the lower limb
    • Complicated and chronic sporting injuries of the lower limb
