Unit description

Introduces students to the concepts of lower limb assessment. Students are introduced to assessment modalities including diagnostic imaging

Unit content

Topic 1: Clinical assessment of the body systems

  • Vascular assessment
  • Neurological assessment
  • Musculoskeletal assessment
  • Dermatological assessment
  • Biomechanical assessment
  • Footwear assessment

Topic 2: Clinical examination of the paediatric and elderly patient

  • Changes in assessment criteria due to age

Topic 3: History and physical examination

  • Medical and social history
  • Systemic signs and symptoms of ill-health

Topic 4: Diagnostic imaging 

  • The science of diagnostic imaging techniques (x-ray, U/S, CT and MRI)
  • Diagnostic imaging for bone pathology
  • Diagnostic imaging for soft tissue pathology
  • Diagnostic imaging for joint pathology

Topic 5: Laboratory and hospital investigations

  • Urinalysis
  • Blood analysis
  • Histology
