Unit description

Introduces students to the concepts of direct patient care and their role in managing patients in a clinical setting. Students are subsequently introduced the concept of reflexive care.

Unit content

Topic 1:    Infection control

-          SCU infection control policies for podiatry

-          Understanding NHMRC guidelines and implementation in podiatry practice

-          Aseptic techniques in general podiatry care

-          Sterilisation protocols

-          Medical waste transfer

 

Topic 2:    Workplace health and safety

-          Understanding SCU health clinic policy

-          Ergonomics in podiatry

-          Reporting injury

-          Duty of care

 

Topic 3:    Medical Records and clinical systems

-          Medico-legal considerations in documentation

-          Maintaining accurate records

 

Topic 4:    Communication and referral

-          Multi-disciplinary care

-          Communicating with health providers

 

Topic 5:    Privacy and Confidentiality

-          Understanding SCU health clinic policy

-          The Privacy Act

-          Freedom of Information Act

-          Rights and responsibilities of the provider and the patient
