Unit description

Provides students with a deep understanding of the diagnostic theory and methods in primary care medicine while integrating osteopathic principles and practices into evidence-based patient care; develops professional and business knowledge and skills in readiness for independent community health practice.

Unit content

  • Case study development, including:
    • Case history interview
    • Integration of basic and clinical sciences
    • Nutritional and lifestyle considerations
    • Diagnostic work up, incorporating best available evidence
    • Development of a rational management plan, including chronic pain and neuro-musculoskeletal rehabilitation and interprofessional collaboration
    • Workshops on interventions in simulated osteopathic practice 

Cases will be drawn from the immunological, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, obstetrics and genitourinary systems.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

evaluate the signs and symptoms of disease in a range of patient present

develop evidence-informed working diagnoses based on clinical guidelines and appropriate findings from physical examination, laboratory and imaging technologies

critically explore the integration of the osteopathic concept of health and disease with the diagnostic process

construct rational management of patient cases based on an integrated diagnostic process and incorporating the best available evidence for neuro-musculoskeletal rehabilitation and chronic pain management

defend working diagnoses and treatment plans using rational clinical reasoning and problem solving skills

evaluate the professional issues of osteopathic practice, including business skills, ethics, medico-legal and financial management
