Unit description

Provides a comprehensive introduction to the clinical skills required in the holistic assessment of the individual, with particular emphasis on osteopathic physical examination. Develops students' clinical reasoning skills as they interpret clinical findings and their consequences for osteopathic clinical practice.  

Unit content

  1. Therapeutic communication and patient interview skills and development of an effective osteopathic consultation.
  2. Synthesis of Differential Diagnosis
  3. Physical Examination Protocol
  4. Critical analysis of the evidence for assessment and diagnosis
  5. Development of the osteopathic working diagnosis
  6. Clinical Reasoning and Integration

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate systematic, thorough and effective patient interview skills

identify and interpret the signs and symptoms of disease affecting specific regions and systems of the body to inform differential diagnosis generation

demonstrate skills of physical assessment of specific regions and systems of the body to inform the osteopathic working diagnosis

demonstrate critical analysis of medical examination, orthopaedic and special tests in the context of osteopathic assessment
