Unit description

Advances comprehension of osteopathic philosophy in diagnosis, treatment, and the concept of evidence based practice.  Building on the skills and understanding gained in earlier units, students will develop more advanced musculoskeletal diagnosis and management of different regions of the body.

Unit content

  1. Osteopathic assessment and treatment of hip joint
  2. Osteopathic assessment and treatment of pelvic girdle and sacroiliac joint: iliosacral dysfunction evaluation and treatment 
  3. Osteopathic assessment and treatment of the pelvic girdle and sacroiliac joint: sacroiliac dysfunction evaluation and treatment
  4. Osteopathic assessment and treatment of the lower limb (knee, ankle/foot)
  5. Osteopathic assessment and treatment of shoulder
  6. Osteopathic assessment and treatment of the elbow and wrist/hand

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

critically discuss how osteopathic principles are integrated in diagnosis and treatment for all regions of the body

demonstrate and reflect upon safe and competent patient-centred osteopathic assessment and treatment in the context of diversity for different populations

critically integrate evidence for sound clinical reasoning to inform decision making

develop basic osteopathic management plans for musculoskeletal presentations in the context of examination findings
