Unit description

Advances comprehension of osteopathic philosophy in diagnosis, treatment, and the concept of evidence based practice.  Introduces exercise rehabilitation and, building on the skills and understanding gained in Osteopathic Studies I & II, students will develop more advanced musculoskeletal diagnosis and management of different regions of the body.

Unit content

  • Orthopaedic evaluation of shoulder. Spenser Technique for shoulder
  • Orthopaedic evaluation of elbow, wrist and hand & muscle energy technique for dysfunction of elbow, wrist and hand
  • Orthopaedic evaluation of hip. Spenser technique for hip
  • Exercise prescription for hip rehabilitation
  • Orthopaedic evaluation of pelvis – iliosacral/sacroiliac dysfunction
  • Muscle energy technique for treatment of pelvic dysfunction
  • Exercise prescription for pelvic pain & dysfunction
  • Orthopaedic evaluation of knee. Muscle energy technique for knee dysfunction 
  • Orthopaedic evaluation of ankle & foot. Muscle energy technique for ankle & foot. Exercise prescription for ankle rehabilitation

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

critically discuss how osteopathic principles are integrated in diagnosis and treatment

demonstrate and reflect upon safe and competent patient handling skills

demonstrate and explain osteopathic diagnosis, ranges of motion and barriers

demonstrate and explain muscle energy technique and soft tissue/myofascial integration techniques.

demonstrate and explain exercise prescription for rehabilitation of the pelvis and lower limb
