Unit description

Examines the impact of occupational performance limitations on education, leisure and play in children and adolescents due to physical, cognitive and psychosocial dysfunction and environmental constraints. Provides the opportunity to develop skills in methods used to assess, maintain, restore and enhance education, leisure and play roles.

  • Overview of play and school occupations
  • Revision of child/adolescent development
  • Understanding school/education systems and associated regulatory policies, and guidelines
  • Pre-school, school, school-to-work occupations and transitions
  • Issues with participation in education and leisure/play
  • Occupational Therapy frames of reference used in paediatrics, including
    • Ecological frame of reference
    • Sensory-integrative frame of reference
    • Neurodevelopmental frame of reference
    • Biopsychosocial frame of reference
    • Adaptive/Compensatory frame of reference
    • Cognitive and learning frames of reference
  • Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions used in paediatrics, play and school
  • Ergonomics, assistive technology and children

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

critically analyse occupations of importance to individuals' occupational roles in their school, cultural, social and familial contexts

analyse the range of, and interaction between, factors that affect performance in play, leisure and school contexts

apply assessment and intervention strategies appropriate to identify needs and promote occupational performance in school and play contexts, and with consideration of the child, the family and other professionals

critically evaluate approaches to intervention using major paediatric frames of reference
