Unit description

Examines occupational performance limitations as a result of musculoskeletal and systemic impairments impacting on biomechanical performance and energy levels. Students will learn the theory and practice of occupational therapy assessment and intervention for occupational performance limitations associated with musculoskeletal impairments and those resulting in reduced energy are presented.

Unit content

  • Pathology of various disorders associated with musculoskeletal and systemic impairments impacting on musculoskeletal performance and energy levels
  • Biomechanical analysis of upper limb movement
  • Assessments for musculoskeletal/movement impairments and those affecting energy capacity including, but not limited to:
    • Active and passive range of motion
    • Manual muscle testing
    • Heart rate monitoring
    • Pulse oximetry
    • Hand/upper limb function
  • Intervention approaches including, but not limited to:
    • Splinting/orthotics
    • Prosthetics
    • Management of reduced energy
    • Strengthening
    • Increasing range of motion
    • Oedema management
    • Improving hand/upper limb function

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

explain and apply the impact on human occupational performance of selected musculoskeletal and systemic impairments

describe, select and use identified standardised and non-standardised techniques to assess musculoskeletal and systemic impairments in relation to occupational performance

explain and use selected intervention strategies that develop, restore and maintain occupational performance with regard to energy levels, upper limb strength, range and dexterity

implement clinical reasoning skills in relation to cases with musculoskeletal and systemic impairments.
