Unit description

Introduces students to the profession of occupational therapy, including: values and beliefs, philosophical bases, foundational concepts, models and scope of current occupational therapy practice. Professional experience learning will focus on the development of professional behaviours, communication, documentation skills and reflective practice.

  • Frameworks and scope of occupational therapy practice
  • The World Health Organization and other perspectives on health, well being and disease
  • Humans as occupational beings
  • Relationship between occupations and health
  • Key constructs of occupational therapy models of practice
  • Professional behaviours which are consistent with the conduct standards of Occupational Therapy
  • Professional information gathering, communication and documentation skills
  • Preparing for success in professional practice and fieldwork learning
  • Research, written expression, reflection and referencing in scholarly written work

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe the philosophy, focus and scope of occupational therapy

investigate and document views of health that have shaped the occupational therapy profession including those of the World Health Organisation

investigate, analyse and document information about occupations, health and well being through professional interviewing

demonstrate ethical and professional communication skills that reflect professional values in occupational therapy

demonstrate key professional behaviours and meet all professional experience requirements in preparation for practice education placements
