    Teaching in this unit is delivered over a two-week intensive period.

Unit description

Builds on the knowledge and skills gained in Nursing Practices I to enable students to further develop their critical thinking and safe practice in the management of the deteriorating patient in the acute inpatient care setting.  Practice in laboratory sessions, and simulated rehearsal, will prepare students to safely assess and manage the care of a patient in the acute inpatient care setting. Students will complete 160hrs of PEP in this unit.

Unit content

  1. Introduction to the deteriorating patient in the acute care setting
  2. Respiratory, cardiac systems and central venous access devices
  3. Gastrointestinal system and nutrition
  4. Renal system, reproductive conditions and endocrine system
  5. Acute musculoskeletal and cerebrovascular care 
  6. Acute mental health deterioration

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

determine appropriate actions to be taken in the management of a deteriorating patient

integrate principles of safe medication practice, including numeracy competency, in managing the acute patient condition

reflect on the role of the nurse in the context of the acute care setting

demonstrate a variety of effective nursing skills
