1 analyse contemporary mental health policy, key legislation and professional standards and how they influence mental health practice and the experience of care
2 review the evidence-based literature on the therapeutic relationship and argue its importance for working in partnership with consumers to meet their holistic needs
3 critically explore the concepts of empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence in the provision of mental health care
4 construct a clinical / case formulation drawing on psychotherapeutic theory, extant research and clinical reasoning which effectively addresses the holistic needs of the individual
5 design an individualised plan for professional development which enables critical reflection in and on practice and the development of interpersonal capabilities for successful professional practice in the mental health field.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
