Unit description

Provides students with a comprehensive understanding of nursing interventions that facilitate health maintenance and restorative health of individuals and communities. Students further develop assessment, screening, clinical skills and cultural safety relevant to working with clients in a range of primary care settings. Problem-solving and decision-making skills, that respond to clinical challenges, will be developed in primary and secondary nursing interventions with priority population groups to provide person-centred care.

  • Risk assessment and nursing practice in a Primary Care Setting
  • Public health-epidemiology, pandemic and disaster management (infection control)
  • Disease and injury prevention
  • Work, health and safety
  • Building healthy communities
  • Community-based screening programs
  • Complex wound assessment & management
  • Medication compliance, polypharmacy and documentation
  • Subcutaneous infusions
  • Maintaining health through nutrition
  • Pain Management in the home
  • Awareness of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)
  • Life limiting conditions and palliation in the community – a holistic approach
  • Approaches to physical and mental health rehabilitation
  • Women’s and men’s health including Sexually Transmitted Infections
