    There is professional experience placement related to this unit. Students will be enrolled manually into PIE10005 PEP 5: Mental Health Nursing for an 80 hour placement.

Unit description

Builds upon foundational knowledge and skills in mental health care and extends student understanding of mental health concepts and care of clients with acute and long-term mental health and psychiatric problems. Students will be provided the opportunity to develop skills in assessment and intervention inclusive of advanced pharmacological, psycho-social and inter-personal knowledge and capabilities.

  • Holistic assessment and therapeutic use of self
  • Talk-based and psychosocial interventions and interpersonal counselling
  • Mood disorders
  • Psychotic disorders: assessment, planning and interventions
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Pharmaco-therapeutics in the care and management of chronic and acute psychiatric disorders
  • Overview of the DSMIV
  • IPCU: high dependency care
  • Seclusion and restraint
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and healing
  • Home and community-based care

5 connect assessment formulations to nursing interventions inclusive of inter-personal relating, talk based interventions and advanced psycho-pharmacology

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
