Unit description

Explores the varying narratives of health and illness. Students will examine the complex meanings behind culture, health, wellness, illness, and disease, with a particular application to indigenous people and those with chronic illness, terminal illness and the elderly.

  • Acute and chronic illness - Gender, social class, health and illness
  • Culture, ethnicity, health and illness - Indigenous health and illness
  • The effect of colonization on the health of Indigenous Australians
  • Health outcomes in Indigenous health - Chronic illness in Indigenous health
  • The meaning and experience of Mental illness
  • Stigma and marginalisation
  • Ageing & ageism, health and illness
  • Attitudes to terminal illness, dying and death
  • Health perception, stress and coping
  • Nursing and multidisciplinary health meanings of health and illness
