Unit description

Learners examine a range of research methodologies that can be utilised in clinical practice environments. These methodologies include case studies, case series, clinical audits, n of 1 studies, single case experimental designs (SCED) and surveys. The learner is also introduced to whole-system research, outcome measures, good clinical practice and ethics. By understanding the purpose, operationalisation, strengths and limitations of each methodology, the learner should be able to apply these methodologies to the clinical practice setting.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. demonstrate a critical understanding of whole systems research, including the benefits and limitations of this approach

critically describe the rationale and criteria for selecting suitable outcome measures

analyse the principles of good clinical practice and human research ethics

critically examine the benefits and limitations of diverse descriptive research methodologies

critically evaluate the benefits and limitations of different interventional research methodologies
