Unit description

Develops students’ emotional and social competence to enable them to care for their own health and wellbeing and that of women and their families. Students will be supported to give and receive clinical supervision and be politically engaged in midwifery and external bodies.  Students will engage in professional presentations as they develop skills of integrating cultural safety into maternity care, effective teamwork and leadership, advanced negotiation and conflict management.

Unit content

Module 1 Enhancing Emotional Competence

  • Emotional needs and defences
  • Revision/application of stress and coping theory and evidence
  • Mindfulness
  • Visioning; career planning, goal setting
  • Self-nurturing activities
  • Social connectedness
  • Professional connectedness
  • Self-reflection, journaling
  • Clinical supervision; giving and receiving professional feedback

Module 2 Enhancing Social Competence

  • Managing challenging relationships with women, their families and communities
  • Integrating cultural safety into practice and maternity care
  • Integrating effective leadership and teamwork in practice
  • Advanced negotiation skills
  • Advanced conflict and bullying management
  • Effective professional presentations, political advocacy and health system change
  • Working within the Australian College of Midwives
  • Working with regulatory bodies for health and education.

Module 3 Maternity care systems: Local, State and Federal

  • Promoting Midwifery Models of Care
  • Developing and Writing Woman Centred Policies and Procedures
  • Understanding Maternity Care Funding and Grants
  • Recognising, challenging and defusing Medical Hegemony
  • Midwifery practice domains; private or public
