Unit description

Applies knowledge of primary health care and public health to maternity care in Australia and globally. In order to learn to work effectively as primary health care practitioners in the community, students will liaise with and critically examine the functionality of other local health facilities and welfare providers. Students demonstrate culturally safe and effective community-based midwifery care through needs assessment and case studies.

Unit content

Module 1 Revision of primary health care and public health

  • Philosophy of Primary Health Care, Health Promotion and Community Development
  • Global and national pregnancy related morbidity and mortality patterns
  • Epidemiology of medical interventions and complications of maternity care

Module 2 Primary health care midwifery in community settings

  • Networking
  • Community needs and services assessment
  • Working with community-based health and welfare agencies
  • Providing culturally safe, community-based primary health care midwifery
  • Primary health care groups in pregnancy and the postnatal period

Module 3 Ensuring safety and quality of midwifery practice

  • Relationships with local maternity unit/s
