Unit description

Develops the students' knowledge about how to care for women and babies with serious disorders or complications during childbearing. Students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to care for women who experience pelvic floor trauma. They learn about genetic and congenital disorders during pregnancy and after birth. Students have placement experiences where they learn how to care for the seriously ill neonate and how to support optimal holistic health for the baby, the woman and her family.

Module 1: Complicated multiple pregnancy, birth and postpartum
Module 2: Complicated breech pregnancy and birth
Module 3: Serious maternal conditions during childbearing
Module 4: Introduction to genetic and congenital conditions of the newborn
Module 5: Introduction to serious infections in the newborn
Module 6: Caring for the seriously ill neonate
Module 7: Psychophysiology effects on baby and families
Module 8: Pelvic floor and soft tissues trauma and healing

6 demonstrate the knowledge and skills to be able to prevent, detect, evaluate and promote the healing of pelvic floor trauma including repairing with sutures
7 demonstrate the knowledge and skills to be able to work effectively in small groups to produce a midwifery learning resource using any media.
