Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. 1 discuss the changing role of women in society and relate this to theories and models of 'the family' and the concept of 'social support'
2 apply ethical theories to discussions on common dilemmas in practice including screening for fetal anomalies, induced abortion, assisted reproduction, and same sex partners, and midwives ethical obligations in relationships
3 apply legal principles to discuss the right to self-determination, consent, privacy, false imprisonment and negligence as these apply in health care practice
4 demonstrate sensitive and effective communication skills with women, their families and the maternity care team including advocacy as appropriate
5 commence, sustain, complete and reflect upon a minimum of two continuity experiences with pregnant women
