Learning outcomes and graduate attributes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. 1 Discuss the changing role of women in society and relate this to theories and models of 'the family' and the concept of 'social support'.
2 Apply ethical theories to discussions on common dilemmas in practice including screening for fetal anomalies, induced abortion, assisted reproduction, and same sex partners, and midwives ethical obligations in relationships.
3 Apply legal principles to discuss the right to self-determination, consent, privacy, false imprisonment and negligence as these apply in health care practice.
4 Use clinical reasoning and communication skills effectively to facilitate evidence-informed decision-making by the woman.
5 Demonstrate sensitive and effective communication skills with women, their families and the maternity care team including advocacy as appropriate.
6 Commence, sustain, complete and reflect upon 5-8 continuity experiences with ten pregnant women.
7 Demonstrate engagement in reflective, observational practice when accompanying a woman to her antenatal education/preparation group meetings.
