    It is strongly recommended that you have completed the following units prior to enrolling in this unit: BIO00307 - Human Physiology AND BIO10662 - Systemic Anatomy Only students who have completed the Mandatory Pre-Practice Requirements can attend clinical practice which is essential for passing this unit. Residential Session has strict attendance requirements. Refer Assessment Information.

1 Describe and explain maternal and fraternal anatomy and reproductive psychophysiology from pre-conception through to 6 weeks post partum.
2 Describe and explain the prenate's and baby's anatomy, psychophysiology and development.
3 Discuss and explain the principles of innate immunity, acquired immunity and infection control in maternity care.
4 Discuss the midwife's knowledge and skills necessary to be able to provide safe and effective midwifery practice in the antenatal care.
5 Demonstrate competence in midwifery knowledge and skills when working with well women to optimise their health in the antenatal period and birth.
6 Demonstrates awareness of midwifery knowledge and skills when working with well women to optimise their psychophysiology during all four stages of undisturbed birth at term including the promotion of maternal-infant attachment and early self-attachment breastfeeding.
7 Demonstrates an awareness of the need to work respectfully and effectively within maternity unit teams including consultation, referral, documentation and use of the obstetrix database.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
