Unit description

Contextualises the role of the midwife and primary health care from the Australian and global healthcare perspective including historical, socio-political, culture influences and the social determinates of health. Students explore fundamental frameworks for evidence-informed, culturally competent and appropriate midwifery care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and other people from culturally and linguistically different backgrounds.

  • History of health provision from an Australian and global perspective
  • Philosophy, principles and strategies of primary health care (Australian & global)
  • Health beliefs, systems & practices and midwifery care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other culturally & linguistically diverse Australians
  • Principles of cultural competence & philosophy of midwifery
