Unit description

Develops knowledge of global patterns of disease and introduces epidemiology. Principles of primary health care and theory of ‘cultural safety’ are taught and applied to midwifery practice including common forms of discrimination and their prevention. Students are introduced to the practice requirements of the course and appraise the Primary Health Care services available to women in their local district.  Basic skills for practice are covered.

4 describe theories of cultural competence as a way to avoid and address common forms of social discrimination
5 demonstrate basic skills for practice: hand washing, numeracy, bed making, safe moving, general health assessment, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, urinalysis and respiration.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
