Unit description

Develops advanced level skills and knowledge in relation to collaborative music making practices, songwriting, composition, arrangement and music performance and presentation. Students will rehearse and perform with two ensembles including a large instrumental ensemble and a student-led project ensemble.

Unit content

  • Musical direction, conducting, rehearsal and performance techniques in large instrumental ensembles
  • Advanced level chart reading and writing.
  • Advanced level improvisation and soloing techniques related to selected repertoire
  • Advanced level stagecraft, presentation and audience engagement.
  • Arrangement techniques relevant to large instrumental ensembles
  • Project development and management skills for collaborative creative projects

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Demonstrate advanced level instrumental or vocal techniques appropriate to selected genres

Apply advanced level composition and arrangement techniques within a large ensemble

Evaluate and reflect on progress and outcomes of collaborative creative project and implement strategies to improve targeted areas in relation to both individual and group practice at an advanced level

Present advanced level creative works within a large instrumental ensemble and a small project ensemble in the form of performances, concerts, recordings or other approved media

Demonstrate ongoing advanced level practice and preparation skills necessary for participation in advanced level ensembles.
