Unit description

Develops intermediate level technical and analytical skills in a specific studio practice area (instrumental/vocal performance, songwriting or production) and introduces students to intermediate level music theory and musicianship skills and knowledge. Students participate in practical and lab sessions and participate in one to one and small group tuition in their chosen studio practice area.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply intermediate level music theory understanding through aural, performance, written, creative and improvisation tasks

apply intermediate level concepts and techniques relevant to a specific studio practice area.

Prescribed Resources/Equipment

  • Students are required to have access to personal instruments and practice equipment including;

    Voice: Microphone, metronome and manuscript paper.

    Bass: Bass guitar, lead, tuner, metronome and manuscript paper.

    Guitar: Guitar (acoustic or electric), lead, tuner, metronome and manuscript paper.

    Keys: Access to keyboard, metronome and manuscript paper.

    Drums: Drum sticks, brushes, practice pad, metronome and manuscript paper.

    Songwriting: As prescribed by individual studio lecturer.

    Production: Access to a DAW of choice, interface, microphone, studio monitors and/or good quality studio headphone (for use with music software in the Mac Lab - V117)

    Other: As prescribed by individual studio lecturer.
