Unit description

Explores the fundamental elements involved in the historical development of contemporary music styles and introduces foundation concepts of Musicology and Ethnomusicology. This unit will develop the student's ability to identify key musical and cultural features of different musical genres.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

discuss the historical development of popular music and the interrelationships between musical styles, technology and the music industry

utilise specific techniques employed in the analysis of contemporary music

describe and aurally identify prominent stylistic features of a range of popular music genres

engage in effective independent popular music research

discuss, through academically written argument, musical analyses of stylistically representative repertoire and related literature.
