Unit description

Introduces students to fundamental musicianship skills and knowledge specifically in relation to theory, aural, keyboard and digital musicianship skills (including notation software and digital audio workstation software). Students participate in lectures, tutorials and lab sessions designed to build foundational level musicianship skills.

Unit content

  • Basic rhythm notation, transcription, reading and performance
  • Pitch basics, intervals, scales and melodic concepts
  • Introductory keyboard skills
  • DAW basics (Pro Tools/Logic/Ableton) and notation software basics (Sibelius)

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

notate music correctly

demonstrate an understanding of basic music theory concepts relating to rhythm, melody, harmony, musical form and texture, and apply these concepts to a range of contemporary music styles

demonstrate a basic competency in musical dictation, transcription, rhythm and melody reading

demonstrate basic competence in the operation of computer music systems and applications

perform basic melodic, harmonic and rhythmic patterns on the piano keyboard.
