Unit description

This unit aims to develop advanced knowledge and skills for HR practitioners and middle to senior managers in managing all facets of the relationship between employers and employees in the Australian context, including industrial matters, occupational health and safety, equitable treatment and the management of performance. It also aims to give students an appreciation of some of how employment relationships are managed by Australia's near neighbours.

Unit content

1. Theories that Inform an Understanding of the Employment Relationship - psychological contract, labour process theories, contemporary theories of work, social, cultural and ideological contexts of employment relations. 
2. Research skills in ER 
3. Collective Employer and Worker representation, The Role of the State 
4. Employment Relations in Australia: History. 
5. Employment Relations in Australia: the past twenty years. 
6. Employment Relations in Australia: 'The Rules' - legislative frameworks, awards, Fair Work Australia. 
7. Employment Relations in Australia: Anti-Discrimination, EEO and OH&S. 
8. Approaches to Performance Management: Policy and Practice - implications for unfair dismissal. 
9. Advocacy and Negotiation 
10. Case Studies in Employment Relations in the Asia Pacific
