Unit description

Supports students to strengthen their skills and knowledge related to effective teamwork and professional development of self and others. It supports the continued development and translation of theory into the practice of midwifery for women, their babies, and families. This is the capstone Midwifery Professional Experience (MPE) unit, and as such, supports students in their preparation for entry to employment as a new graduate midwife. Students will align their practice with the NMBA Midwife standards for practice.  This unit is the second of two units comprising a year-long placement.

Unit content

  1. Developing skills and knowledge to maintain genital tract integrity and health
  2. The Midwife’s scope of practice: inter-professional roles and responsibilities to facilitate ongoing development of self, colleagues and students
  3. Provision of safe and quality health care
  4. Completing ANMAC Midwifery Professional Experiences (MPE) requirements and preparing for practice as a new graduate

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate a broad understanding and application of midwifery knowledge, theoretical concepts and skills in the provision of safe and quality care

consolidate and synthesise knowledge of the legal, ethical, cultural and professional frameworks as they apply to practical situations

show critical thinking and creative skills in identifying and solving problems within the discipline

demonstrate achievement of all ANMAC Midwifery Professional Experiences (MPE) requirements necessary to register as a Midwife with AHPRA
