Unit description

Supports students to strengthen their skills and knowledge related to effective teamwork and professional development of self and others. It supports the continued development and translation of theory into the practice of midwifery for women, their babies, and families. This unit supports students in their preparation for entry to employment as a new graduate midwife. Students will align their practice with the NMBA Midwife standards for practice. This unit is the first of two units comprising a year-long placement.

Unit content

  1. Recognition and response to the deteriorating maternal patient or neonate
  2. Creating woman-midwife partnerships through all models of maternity care, focusing on continuity of care models
  3. The Midwife’s scope of practice: inter-professional roles and responsibilities to facilitate preparation for entry to employment as a new graduate midwife
  4. Provision of safe and quality health care
  5. ANMAC Midwifery Professional Experiences (MPE) requirements

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate a broad understanding and application of midwifery knowledge, theoretical concepts and clinical skills in the provision of safe and quality care

provide evidence, through reflection on practice, of effective woman-centred, and intra-professional communication with women and their families

show critical thinking and creative skills in identifying and solving problems within the discipline

demonstrate a satisfactory level of progression towards the ANMAC Midwifery Professional Experiences (MPE) requirements
