Unit description

Promotes the continued development and translation of theory into practice with a focus on women and babies requiring complex postnatal care. It provides theory and skill development as well as specific clinical learning objectives aligned with the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards: Medication Safety and Communicating for Safety, in the context of providing woman-centred care when the woman experiences complexities. This unit is the second of two units comprising a year-long placement builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in Midwifery Professional Experience 1.

Unit content

  1. Communication, collaboration, and partnership within the maternity unit to ensure positive health outcomes for women with complex care needs
  2. Midwifery knowledge, skills and scope of practice in safely administering medications in the postnatal period
  3. Providing midwifery care in collaboration with other health professionals, for women and their babies, in the postnatal period
  4. ANMAC Midwifery Professional Experiences (MPE) requirements

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

show intermediate abilities to translate research and theory into practice through written and verbal communication modes

demonstrate intermediate understandings of the legal, ethical, cultural and professional frameworks through reflection on practice

demonstrate expanding midwifery knowledge, skills acquisition, attitudes, values and abilities to provide quality and safe midwifery care for women and babies

demonstrate a satisfactory level of progression towards the ANMAC Midwifery Professional Experiences (MPE) requirements
