Unit description

Provides a holistic perspective on the role of the midwife in relation to working with the well woman and her baby across the antenatal period, labour and birth. Students will discuss the psychophysiological responses in the antenatal period, labour and birth.

Unit content

  • The psychophysiological responses to preconception and conception
  • The psychophysiological responses to (normal) pregnancy and growing healthy babies
  • Midwifery care for the well woman and her fetus(es)/baby(ies) during the antenatal period
  • The psychophysiological responses to labour and birth
  • Midwifery care for the well woman and her fetus/baby during labour and birth
  • Medications

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

provide evidence-informed midwifery care for the well woman and her fetus/baby across the antenatal period, labour and birth

explain and summarise the psychophysiological responses during the antenatal period, labour and birth

explore the midwife’s role as facilitator to support women in decision-making that optimises health and wellbeing in the antenatal period, labour and birth

demonstrate and apply midwifery knowledge and skills to effectively undertake a basic neonatal resuscitation
