Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
explain concepts of microbiology including growth, metabolism, transmission, and classification of microorganisms
identify and describe the differences between common species of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths and viruses
discuss the application of microorganisms in biotechnology, including DNA recombinant technologies commonly employed in medical and research industries
discuss the principles of microbial disease and pathogenicity, host-microbe interactions and epidemiology
safely employ microbiological techniques, and interpret and analyse microbiological data in the biomedical setting.
